Trades Specialist (Mason and Plasterer)
Successful completion of a NYS two-year Mason & Plasterer Traineeship or NYS two-year masonry training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent masonry two-year training or apprenticeship program; OR four (4) years of full-time experience in masonry under a skilled journey-level mason which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship training in masonry or training gained by completion of technical courses in masonry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Under the direction of the Regional Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent performs journey level tasks and projects involving masonry, plaster work and stonework, Work assignments will require the incumbent to travel in park vehicles to other facilities within the Palisades Interstate Parks Region.
The incumbent will plan and lay out work, including ordering materials and equipment; perform routine masonry and repairs, including finish work;
perform restoration work on historic buildings and structures that will retain the original fabric.
Monitor and train crews on routine masonry skills, safety practices, and supervise crews on a variety of masonry projects.
The incumbent must have the ability to read blueprints and project plans as well as supply rough sketches for work to be performed and have a working knowledge of modem code compliance.
Employee lays building materials such as stone, brick, concrete, cinder block and the like to construct or repair walls, partitions, utility manholes, firebrick linings in furnaces, and chimneys.
Smooth and finish surfaces of poured concrete floors, walls, and sidewalks to specified texture.
Tasks include the mixing or direct the mixing of concrete. Spreads concrete to specified depth and workable consistency.
Be knowledgeable in application of ceramic tiles to walls, floors, and ceilings, including preparation of surfaces by removing damaged tiles.
Ability to apply coats of plaster to walls and ceilings, including the preparation of surface, mixing of plaster, and application of plaster, and the erection of scaffolding if needed.
Masons may be called upon to draw rough sketches or prepare plans to scale from oral or written instructions to accomplish the project, or to work from blueprints or specifications.
Mason will be called upon to estimate labor, materials, tools and equipment necessary for the project.
Incumbent will be asked to observe and inspect the work while in progress and when completed to ensure that the job is done properly.
Must possess and maintain a valid New York State driver's license as a term and condition of employment.
Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
Must be qualified and or certified in Scaffold work, as a Scaffold competent person, aerial lift, and bucket lift or obtain training and certification within probationary period as a term and condition of employment.
